About
I was born in Dallas, Texas in 1963 and soon after moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where I was exposed to Harvard Square’s rich diversity of the sixties. Particularly memorable was a friend’s parent who was an art student, and explained a prevailing art mantra of the time, order out of chaos. That left an indelible impression. I entered Wheaton College in 1981 as a theology major, but was promptly put on spiritual probation. I then attended Carnegie Mellon University and studied philosophy for a few years, and following the long strange windy road, graduated with a BA in painting, magna cum laude, The University of Texas at Dallas, and Texas Woman’s University, MA; with a major in painting and drawing, and a minor in art history.
Artist Statement
My mixed media abstract paintings are grounded in the idea that art is language and that artmaking throughout history is a manifestation of human self-disclosure. So based on those fundamental ideas, my paintings are a means of figuring things out and offering to the viewer ideas to consider. I use liberated elements to both disrupt the picture plane, and to find their partial resolution. Polished areas of the works are rendered through adherence to academic art guidelines, in reference to our civilized side. Rough, raw areas on the canvas represent messy but truthful inner states, the way life is.
Over the past year I have appropriated and personalized ancient symbols in an effort to think about current political dysphoria and cultural disruption. Through the language of art, I use the visual elements to encourage the viewer to, if not reach higher levels of thought, to at least have a visual response of “That’s cool.”
